The Montreal Canadiens traded long-time goalie Carey Price to the San Jose Sharks on Friday in exchange for defenceman prospect Gannon Laroque and a 2026 fifth-round pick.

Price was in the final year of his eight-year deal with Montreal that he signed prior to the 2017-2018 season.

Trading Price's $10.5 million price tag now gives the Habs $4.6 million in projected cap space.

The 38-year-old's playing career is over, as this is simply a trade for the Habs to get back under the cap. They were $5.9 million over; now they're $4.56 million under following the trade. While Price's contract will account for $10.5 million against the cap for the Sharks, they're only paying him just below $2 million.

Price spent all 15 years of his NHL career in Montreal but has yet to play in a game since 2022 due to injuries, more specifically, a surgical procedure on his right knee.

The multi-award-winning netminder won four awards after the 2014-2015 season, including the Vezina Trophy for best goalie. He made the All-Rookie team after a stellar 2007-2008 debut season, posting a 24-12 record with a .920 save percentage and 2.56 goals against average.

Price won his only Vezina following a 2014-2015 season when he led the league in both save percentage (.933) and GAA (1.96), but also won the NHL MVP award the same season, being just one of eight goalies to ever win the award. His MVP award was the first for a goalie in 15 years at the time he won it.

In 712 games (700 starts), Price posted a 361-261 record with a .917 career save percentage and 2.507 GAA. Price's 361 career wins put him 23rd on the all-time wins list, while his save percentage is tied for 11th-best and GAA 38th - just ahead of Hall of Famer Roberto Luongo - leaving fans upset earlier this year after Price was snubbed from the Hall in his first year of eligibility.

He officially finishes his career with the Canadiens as the historic franchise's all-time leader in wins.

And after another disappointing year, Montreal's 2025-2026 season starts on October 8th against the Toronto Maple Leafs
