Rayo Vallecano moved seven points clear of the LaLiga relegation zone with a 1-0 victory over Elche, securing a fourth successive H2H home win in the process.

Buoyed by a huge win over fellow strugglers Mallorca before the international break, Elche made a fast start here and almost took the lead immediately from the kick-off, but Rayo goalkeeper Augusto Batalla was alert at his near post to keep hold of Rafa Mir’s strike.

In response, the hosts had their own attempt at goal, with Alvaro Garcia firing straight into Matias Dituro’s arms. Mir was back in search of the game’s opening goal shortly before the quarter-hour mark with another snapshot that Batalla again gathered well.

Elche’s top scorer made it a hat-trick of shots on target for the visitors in the 18th minute with an ambitious curling attempt that Batalla got behind to keep the game goalless. Despite Elche enjoying the majority of the action in front of goal, the deadlock ought to have been broken by Rayo after 34 minutes.

Put through on goal by Alemao’s defence-splitting pass, García’s decision to instinctively strike rather than take a touch backfired as he sent his effort a long way over the bar. An end-to-end first half ended with Elche having their captain, Pedro Bigas, sent off after being shown a second yellow card for a high boot on his opposite number Oscar Valentin.

Bigas’ dismissal forced Eche manager Eder Sarabia into a change at half-time, and Mir was the unfortunate one to be sacrificed to accommodate Adria Pedrosa’s introduction. And it was the defender who nearly made an immediate impact on the game, but his close-range effort failed to call Batalla into making a serious save. Pep Chavarria forced Dituro into a more meaningful save after the hour mark, but Rayo’s persistence would eventually be rewarded.

Less than 10 minutes after coming off the bench, Randy Nteka got ahead of his marker to expertly send Garcia’s dangerous delivery into the six-yard area past Dituro, scoring his first club goal since January 2025.

That secured arguably Rayo’s biggest three points of the season, alleviating their relegation fears further ahead of their UEFA Conference League quarter-final on Thursday. Meanwhile, a sixth straight away league defeat for Elche leaves them only two points ahead of the bottom three, and things could get even worse, with both Mallorca and Levante having the potential to leapfrog them later in the weekend.
