Jonas Vingegaard extended his gap as leader of the Volta a Catalunya after he arrived solo at the finish of the 6th stage in Queralt after breaking away from his closest challengers on the final climb of the stage.

Jonas Vingegaard took another step towards claiming the overall title in Volta a Catalunya when he attacked on the final climb to Queralt on stage 6 to claim a decisive solo victory.

The decisive moment at the final climb arrived when the dominant Dane launched a forceful acceleration and immediately opened a gap that no one could follow. Florian Lipowitz and Lenny Martinez attempted to respond but were unable to match Vingegaard and were quickly distanced.

"We wanted to win the stage today. We had a breakaway with Bart (Lemmen, ed.), Menno (Huising, ed.), and Bruno (Armirail, ed.) controlled it well for a long time. Jorgen (Nordhagen, ed.) took over on the steep part, so the whole team did fantastic today. They did really well. On the last descent, Red Bull pressed on, but luckily I was right there", said Vingegaard after the stage.

"I had the legs for an attack on the final climb, so I moved, and at that moment I was able to pull away from the others. A good day, and I'm happy with the victory. I want to thank my teammates", said Vingegaard.

Lenny Martinez took an important second spot on the day ahead of Florian Lipowitz, with Valentin Paret-Peintre, Remco Evenepoel, and Richard Carapaz all coming in behind them.

Vingegaard leads the overall classification by 1, 22 min. ahead of Martinez and 1,30 min in front of Lipowitz.

The race ends, as always, in the city of Barcelona on Sunday, where the first part of the route is flat as a pancake, which will quickly transport the riders to an explosive route in and around the Parc de Montjuic.

The 2.5 km ascent of Montjuïc is a 2nd category climb that is tackled seven times.  Following the last ascent of the Alt de Castell de Montjuïc, there is a very fast and technical 4.5 km descent to the finish line
