Nigerian football legend Henry Nwosu passed away on Saturday morning, according to his former international teammate Segun Odegbami.

The former midfielder died at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital after a brief illness, aged 62.

"Henry Nwosu passes on!," Odegbami wrote on his social media handle.

“After 5 days in hospital battling for his life, the one I call ‘Youngest Millionaire’ passed on at 4:00 am this morning at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos, where he had been in Intensive Care since Wednesday.

“It is with deep pain in my heart that I have to be the conveyor of the news of the death of Henry Nwosu MON, the youngest of the victorious 1980 AFCON squad. May he rest peacefully with our creator in heaven.“

Nwosu’s death comes days after the passing of former Super Eagles coach Adegboye Onigbinde.

He was part of the Nigeria national football team squad that won the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations at just 17, making him the youngest member of the team.

Born in Imo State, the midfield maestro began his career with New Nigeria Bank before joining African Continental Bank in Lagos.

He later moved abroad to play for ASEC Mimosas in Cote d’Ivoire and Racing FC Bafoussam in Cameroon.

After retiring, Nwosu moved into coaching and served as an assistant to Onigbinde during the 2002 FIFA World Cup. He later worked with Samson Siasia at the 2008 Summer Olympics, where Nigeria won a silver medal.

He also coached Nigeria’s U17 team before spells with Union Bank and Gateway United in Abeokuta.
