Mjallby must wait at least another two weeks before their maiden Allsvenskan title is confirmed after second-placed Hammarby held on for a 2-1 win away at IFK Goteborg, which leaves the Stockholm side 11 points behind the leaders with four matches to play.

Mjallby secured a 2-0 win over Elfsborg on Saturday, which meant only a win would do for Hammarby to stay in the title race, even if it's a race they have little hope of winning.

But even if the gold medal is beyond them, a European place is not, which gave Bajen plenty to fight for as they travelled to Gothenburg. Yet, Goteborg have propelled themselves into the race for Europe, too, and thus had a lot to fight for as well, setting up a mouth-watering clash at Gamla Ullevi.

Conditions were testing, but Hammarby passed the early test with flying colours, whereas Goteborg failed to get going. Three minutes in, the home defence looked sluggish as Adrian Lahdo worked the ball out to Paulos Abraham, who curled in the opening goal with ease.

Goteborg looked disjointed in attack after falling behind, forcing Warner Hahn to make just one save in the first half, though it was a crucial one with his foot when Saidou Alioum looked sure to equalise.

Though Hammarby continued to look dangerous, they failed to work Elis Bishesari again before the break.

The IFK goalkeeper was a busier man in the second half, keeping out efforts from Abraham and Nahir Besara, and when the 'keeper was beaten, he relied on defender August Erlingmark to clear a Besara strike off the line to keep Goteborg in the contest.

Abraham at the double

A second Hammarby goal was on the cards, and it arrived just past the hour mark - Obilor Okeke, on his first start for Bajen, drove down the left and fizzed in a low cross which Abraham met at the back post to tuck in his second of the game.

Going 2-0 down brought out the best in Goteborg, who launched and worked plenty of balls into the Hammarby box, but were either lacking cutting edge or were thwarted by solid defending from the visitors.

That was until a corner with nine minutes to play, which was knocked down by Erlingmark to Max Fenger, who bundled the ball home to set up a grandstand finish.

Ironically, a player wearing black and yellow almost handed Mjallby the title, as three minutes later, Hahn had to be perfectly positioned to prevent Frederik Winther turning the ball into his own net.

Deep into added time, the ball broke for Felix Eriksson to strike from 25 yards, but when his shot was blocked by Victor Eriksson, it meant Hammarby had held on for a nervy 2-1 victory.

The loss, plus this weekend's other results, leaves Goteborg a point outside the European places with four matches still to play. Hammarby must now beat fellow European-hopefuls AIK and hope Mjallby fail to beat IFK next time to extend the title race for another round.
