Ole Werner’s RB Leipzig side equalled their second-highest Bundesliga win with a 6-0 thumping of Augsburg, helping to strengthen Die Roten Bullen’s position as Bayern Munich's closest challengers for the title.

It was a masterclass in finishing from Leipzig in the first half, with the visitors netting an astonishing four goals before the break.

They got the ball rolling just 10 minutes in when Yan Diomande danced his way into the box before tucking home a tidy finish to break the deadlock.

The score was doubled before the midway point of the half, this time through Romulo, who stylishly swept home Assan Ouedraogo’s pinpoint cross.

Augsburg weren’t exactly invisible going forward, but the hosts struggled to make the right decision in the final third, which allowed Leipzig to find joy on the counter.

Diomande then turned provider for Antonio Nusa, who tapped home without much pressure from the Augsburg defence, and it was another counter-attack that led to Leipzig’s fourth; goalkeeper Finn Dahmen ought to have done better with Christoph Baumgartner’s curling effort from inside the penalty area.

Despite having 15 minutes to rally the troops, the same issues plagued Augsburg in the second half, with Leipzig continuing to carve out chances at ease.

A tidy give-and-go between Baumgartner and Assan Ouedraogo saw the latter presented with a shooting opportunity on the edge of the box - one the 19-year-old converted with aplomb.

It turned out Augsburg’s defensive issues weren’t limited to open play either, as a set-piece cross caused all manner of problems, allowing Castello Lukeba an easy tap-in after Dahmen strayed off his goal line.

That proved to be the final noteworthy action of the encounter as Leipzig completed a statement victory.

The heavy defeat now means Augsburg have the worst defence in Germany’s top flight, which doesn’t bode well for their hopes of avoiding the drop. By contrast, only two sides have scored more goals than Leipzig after what was their seventh Bundesliga outing without defeat in a row.
