According to the managing director of men's professional football, Horst Heldt, who was quoted on the club's website, this was the result of an "absolutely disappointing second half of the season."
"We urgently need points to secure our place in the league," Heldt stated as the club's objective. He no longer believes that a "turnaround can be achieved with the current set-up."
Marie Louise Eta makes history
For the time being, Marie Louise Eta will take charge on the sidelines. She currently coaches the U19s and will lead the women's team starting this summer.
"I'm pleased that Marie Louise Eta has agreed to take on this role on an interim basis," said Heldt.
Eta becomes the first-ever female head coach in a men's top-flight European league, albeit on an interim basis.
Eta herself is confident about staying in the league: "I'm grateful that the club has entrusted me with this challenging task.
"One of Union's strengths has always been to come together and pool all our resources in tough situations. And of course, I firmly believe that we will pick up the crucial points with this team."
Baumgart returned to Berlin in January 2025 - the former striker played for the Eisernen from 2002 to 2004.
After the first half of the season, Union was ninth in the table with 23 points, but since the winter restart, Baumgart's team managed to collect only nine more points.
