Why Jadon Sancho's career is at a tipping point as Serie A giants circle

At just 25 years of age, Jadon Sancho has come to a major crossroads in his football career.

The winger is not wanted by Ruben Amorim at Manchester United and with only a few days to go until the start of the 2025/26 season, he is still in limbo in terms of his future destination.

Whoever decides to push the boat out and take a risk on the England international, they do so in the knowledge that as well as United, Sancho wasn't seen as good enough for Chelsea - who paid the Red Devils money to take him back rather than sign him permanently.

For a player who had the world at his feet a few years ago, he is perilously close at this point to being another statistic. Another player who should've made much more of his enviable skill set.

He only needs to look at another United ace, Jesse Lingard, and how his career has ended up. From scoring the winner in an FA Cup final for the Red Devils to the footballing wilderness with FC Seoul.

Signed by Manchester United for a hefty £73m

Let's not forget that when United signed Sancho back in 2021 it was for a hefty fee of £73m and on the back of some excellent performances for Borussia Dortmund.

It's rumoured that the Bundesliga outfit are biding their time over a new bid for their former ace, but with Juventus, Inter and Roma all circling too, they'll need to be quick off the mark if they want to secure Sancho's services.

Whilst the transfer window is also open for some time yet, it isn't good business practice to leave things until the last minute, particularly as the new seasons in the European leagues will be some three weeks old by the time Deadline Day approaches.

Dortmund return?

Dortmund sporting director, Sebastian Kehl, had previously confirmed discussions for a Sancho return.

"Jadon is constantly being linked with us," Kehl is reported to have said. "I understand the desire. We're thinking about it within our possibilities. The conditions have to be right. We will definitely do something, but we're limited."

So what will interested parties be getting for their money?

For a start, they will have a player that knows he's got to prove himself all over again. The motivation has to be there from the get-go for Sancho, not only because of any club aspirations but because it's a World Cup year and, despite not hitting the heights for a while, there remains a possibility of a recall under Thomas Tuchel.

40 goals in 118 Bundesliga matches

If that can't get him back up to the levels which saw Man Utd make him one of their most expensive acquisitions, then arguably there's not much hope for his career heading on an upward trajectory once more.

In any event, Dortmund is where he's enjoyed the most success and if they can get their finances together, a move would suit both given that Sancho scored 40 goals and provided 54 assists in 118 Bundesliga matches for them.

That's a one-in-three goals-to-games ratio which is more than acceptable for a wide man.

12 goals in 89 appearances in the Premier League throughout his career is a much poorer one-in-seven ratio, with only 11 assists to boot.

His shooting accuracy hit its peak of 78.6% both at Dortmund during the 2018/19 German top-flight season and at United in the 2022/23 campaign, but has since dropped to 66.7%.

In terms of shot conversion, his 12.5% stat is almost the worst it's ever been, only going lower (11%) during the 2021 Premier League season and the 2017/18 Bundesliga campaign (10%).

117 shots on target in the past seven years in all domestic competitions, whether in Germany or England, isn't the greatest return either.

Superior pass completion

However, one area where Sancho has excelled throughout his career is with regard to his pass completion.

Only twice since 17/18 has it dropped below 80%, and even then only to 78% (2018/19 German Cup) and 79% (2022/23 English League Cup).

Even during his Chelsea loan spell, he managed 85.2% suggesting a real appreciation of play and where his teammates are in relation to any forward momentum.

Perhaps the one overriding question still to be answered then, is one of attitude.

Attitude problems?

A mega fall-out with Erik ten Hag was unfortunate but clashes of personality at work often occur.

What doesn't make sense is why Amorim is happy to cast him aside without a second thought of giving Sancho the chance to re-establish himself at the Theatre of Dreams.

Ultimately, the player's future is away from Old Trafford and if this isn't the last chance saloon for him already, should any other issues rear their ugly head it will almost certainly mean the end of Sancho's career at the top level of European football.
