The knockout rounds of this season's UEFA competitions are here and boy are they starting with a bang, with some of Europe's biggest clubs facing off in the playoff rounds of the Champions League and Europa League.

Here are the four standout first-leg clashes:

Tuesday, February 11th

Manchester City vs Real Madrid - 21:00 CET

Two of the biggest clubs in the world. The two most successful active coaches in the world. Some of the best players in the world. It doesn't get any better than this, does it?

Manchester City and Real Madrid both endured disappointing league phases and have paid the price for it, being drawn against one another for the fourth season in a row in what is becoming one of football's great rivalries.

That's largely because of how evenly matched it is, with City winning five and Los Blancos winning four of their 12 Champions League clashes, and the Spanish side winning three of the five knockout ties the two clubs have contested

They may be meeting earlier than usual this season but that doesn't make their meeting any less important. With this potentially being Carlo Ancelotti's last chance to win a Champions League with Real Madrid and Manchester City's last chance to make this season a success given their disappointing league campaign, both clubs will be treating this tie like a final.

Juventus vs PSV - 21:00 CET

If there's going to be an upset in the Champions League playoffs, the best chance of it happening is in this tie, with a struggling Juventus meeting a PSV side that can be unstoppable on their day.

Juve may be the bigger club and have the stronger squad, but they finished six places below the Dutch side in the league phase and have far less momentum, finishing it with a draw to Club Brugge and a loss to Benfica while PSV beat Red Star Belgrade and Liverpool.

Aside from the possibility of a win for the underdog, this match-up is also made intriguing by the stark contrast in styles with Thiago Motta's Juventus being one of the most defensive sides in Europe and Peter Bosz's PSV being one of the most attacking. This clash certainly won't follow the usual template of the favourite dominating the ball and their opponents sitting back and waiting for counter-attacking opportunities.

Juve did win 3-1 when the sides met back in September, but given their poor form of late - their win over Como at the weekend was highly unconvincing - don't be surprised if they don't have it so easy this time around.

Wednesday, February 12th

Feyenoord vs AC Milan - 21:00 CET

Dutch and Italian giants will face off again on Wednesday night when AC Milan travel to Rotterdam to take on a Feyenoord side that's been one of the surprise packages of this Champions League campaign thus far.

While they've struggled in the league, the Dutch club have picked up some excellent results in Europe, beating Bayern Munich 3-0, claiming a 3-1 victory at Benfica and fighting back from 3-0 down to draw with Manchester City.

However, their domestic form has been so poor that they sacked Brian Priske at the start of the week, meaning they head into this clash without a manager and without former star striker Santiago Gimenez, who will be returning to De Kuip in new colours having left for Milan last month.

He got his first goal for his new club at the weekend, has five goals in five Champions League games this season and is facing a vulnerable side - playing for one of the world's biggest clubs on the biggest stage for the first time, this could be the night that the Mexican firmly establishes himself as one of the most exciting strikers around.

Thursday, February 13th

Porto vs Roma - 21:00 CET

The standout tie in the Europa League playoffs pits two real heavyweights against one another with Porto taking on Roma.

Neither side have had the best of seasons in their respective leagues, with the Portuguese club a long way behind Sporting and Benfica while Roma are down in ninth in Serie A, making the Europa League all the more important for both.

Roma have begun to make some progress under Claudio Ranieri, getting three wins in their last five matches and also drawing against league leaders Napoli, so a win against Porto would establish them as contenders in this competition.

Getting that win won't be easy though, with Porto only losing one match at home all season. For new manager Martin Anselmi, who has beaten Maccabi Tel Aviv and drawn with Rio Ave and Sporting in his first three matches, this will be a big chance to kick-start his reign.
