Paris Saint-Germain paid the price for an untimely three-game winless run in the UEFA Champions League as both they and Newcastle United missed out on a place in the top eight following a 1-1 draw in Paris.

In a pivotal contest for a place in the top eight, PSG were irresistible in the opening exchanges and forced a penalty inside 60 seconds.

Lewis Miley was unlucky to be penalised as the ball bounced up into his outstretched arm, but he was bailed out by a magnificent save from Nick Pope, who plunged to his left to turn Ousmane Dembele’s spot-kick behind.

Unfortunately for the Magpies, the respite was short-lived as the hosts struck the opener in the eighth minute when Vitinha was given far too much time and space on the edge of the box, duly punishing the visitors with a pinpoint curling effort.

The hosts continued to push and should’ve extended their lead, yet Pope continued to impress with smart saves to deny Dembélé’s angled shot before Khvicha Kvaratskhelia also tested him from the edge of the area.

Having stood up to the early onslaught, Eddie Howe’s side slowly started to claw their way back into the game, and they were rewarded with an equaliser out of nowhere in first-half stoppage time.

Dan Burn used his height and strength to keep a set-piece alive by turning the ball back into the area, and Joe Willock pounced to nod home his first UCL goal, stunning the Parc des Princes crowd.

The visitors thought they had completed the turnaround 10 minutes after the break when some quick thinking from Anthony Elanga released Willock to score his second, but the celebrations were quickly extinguished by the offside flag.

Les Parisiens continued to dominate possession despite looking increasingly nervous in defence, and the tension continued to rise when Dembélé turned the ball wide from a promising position in the box

In the final moments, it was Newcastle who came closest to claiming all three points, but Harvey Barnes somehow missed the target from close range after fine work from Anthony Gordon.

Ultimately, results elsewhere meant that a point wasn’t enough for either side to secure a place in the top eight, and they will now need to contest the playoffs of the knockout stages.
