Xabi Alonso and Trent return as Liverpool take on Real Madrid in Champions League epic

One of the great Champions League clashes takes place on Tuesday night as Liverpool welcome Spanish giants and serial UCL winners Real Madrid to Anfield.

Since the 2017/18 season, the teams have met each other on seven occasions, and the eighth encounter means that only Manchester City vs Real Madrid (10) and Paris Saint-Germain vs Bayern Munich (9) have been played more often in the same time frame.

Special game in prospect

It'll be a special game for several reasons, but perhaps none more so than the return of Xabi Alonso to a club where he enjoyed great success - including winning the Champions League in the epic 2005 final against AC Milan - and Trent Alexander-Arnold returning to the club he left at the end of last season.

Los Blancos arrive in the North West of England as one of five clubs with a perfect record in this season's competition.

Three wins from three have included eight goals scored and just one conceded, and the last four times that the LaLiga side have begun a Champions League campaign with four wins, they've gone on to win the competition twice (2002 and 2024), whilst making it to the semi-final stage on the other two occasions (2012 and 2015).

Contrasting fortunes

Along with their superb current league form, Real are going to be a tough nut to crack for Arne Slot's side, and indeed, in their last six matches in all competitions, Alonso's squad have scored 16 goals and conceded only two.

By contrast, Liverpool's current form doesn't stand up under scrutiny at this point. Four losses and two wins from their last six games is the polar opposite of how the Premier League outfit began their 2024/25 campaign.

Scoring 11 and conceding 11 in that time is quite an alarming statistic too.

The Reds may therefore look to take heart from their game against the Spaniards last season - a match which ended 2-0 thanks to goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo - and the fact that they've won 20 of their last 22 home Champions League group-stage games, including each of their last 12 in a row, rather than dwell on the fact that they didn't win the eight previous matches between the two sides.

Will Trent play any part?

Slot has also won 10 of his 13 UCL games to date with the Reds, which is a fine return for a manager only in the job for just over a year.

In terms of personnel, Trent has been on the bench for the past two games after returning from injury, and it will be interesting to see if Alonso decides whether this is the game in which the England international should return.

It seems clear that the manager doesn't do football romance, so the only way Alexander-Arnold gets either a start, given that Dani Carvajal, Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba are all missing, or a cameo role is if he's considered the best man for the job.

Given the player's inauspicious start at the Santiago Bernabeu and the pressure that a capacity Anfield crowd will bring to bear upon him, that's entirely up for debate at this stage.

Mbappe the danger man

One player that will need to be watched is the effervescent and deadly Kylian Mbappe. So far this season, the Frenchman has already bagged 13 goals and two assists in 11 LaLiga games, whilst also scoring five in the Champions League.

Those types of stats are what Alexander Isak can only dream of at this point, but the Swede won't play any part in the match because of injury.

He's joined on the sidelines by Jeremie Frimpong and Alisson Becker, the latter's continued absence giving Giorgi Mamardashvili the chance to make a real name for himself.

Given that Madrid have had the most shots at goal in the competition so far (37), the custodian is likely to have a busy night between the posts.

Salah and Ekitike can fire the Reds to glory

Mo Salah found the net against Villa and, alongside a lively Hugo Ekitike, we might well see that Thibaut Courtois doesn't have a quiet 90 minutes either.

Goals can certainly be expected in the fixture, given that in the 12 times that Liverpool have played Real Madrid, only one match has ended in a goalless draw.

Whilst a win for Liverpool isn't imperative at this early stage, three points would at least draw them level with their opponents and give the players a further boost after that win over Villa at the weekend, which stopped the rot in terms of consecutive losses.

Another special Anfield atmosphere is guaranteed, and the Reds faithful will surely be hoping for another night similar to when those other Spanish giants Barcelona came to town and were put to the sword.
