Nigerian youngster Emmanuel Godwin has opened up on his decision to join Czech top-flight side FK Pardubice, describing the move as a vital step in advancing his career.

The Tripple 44 Academy graduate moved to East Bohemia after signing a four-and-a-half-year contract, having impressed during his stint with Swedish second-division club Trelleborgs FF.

Godwin becomes the third African player in Jan Trousil’s squad, joining Gambian forward Muhammed Suso and fellow Nigerian Abdullahi Tanko.

Known for his pace and tactical awareness, the 20-year-old is expected to add solidity to Pardubice’s defence as they look to finish strongly in the Chance Liga following an underwhelming start to the 2025/26 campaign.

For the player, the switch represents a carefully considered move in his continued rise in European football.

"I had a lot of opportunities, especially after the season ended and Trelleborgs FF got relegated. I received offers from Norway and within Sweden, but I felt it was the right time to move to a bigger league and take my career to the next level," Godwin told Flashscore.com

"The level of interest FK Pardubice showed in me really stood out and played a big role in my decision.

"Also, signing the contract made me very happy because it came at the right time and gave me the motivation I needed. I’m delighted to be here and excited to start again at a higher level."

Godwin outlines Pardubice ambition

Godwin praised the warm reception he has received since arriving in the Czech Republic, adding that the club’s project played a major role in convincing him to make the move, while also outlining his personal targets for the season.

"So far, everyone has been incredibly welcoming, showing me support and helping me settle in quickly," he added.

"I’m very happy to be here. My personal goal is to adapt as fast as possible so I can contribute effectively to the team. The club presented their project to me, and I love everything they expect from me.

"It has made me realise how much they can help me grow as a player and improve on areas I need to work on. My short-term aim is to continue developing, bring all my qualities to the pitch, and help the team finish the season in a strong position."

Several Nigerians have already made their mark in the Czech top flight, including Peter Olayinka, Igoh Ogbu, Yira Sor, and Samson Tijani. He views their success as a source of motivation rather than pressure, seeing it as proof that he, too, can thrive in the league.

"When you join a league and know that players from your country have come here and done well, it gives you confidence and peace of mind," said Godwin.

"If they can succeed, then you know you can too. Knowing that there will always be fellow Nigerians around also makes it easier to settle in.

"For me, that’s a big motivating factor. I plan to take it one step at a time, focus on contributing positively to the team, and hopefully use this opportunity to grow and one day play on an even bigger stage."

How Tripple 44 almost didn't sign him

Seasoned Nigerian football administrator and Tripple 44 Academy proprietor, Samuel Olatunji-Okuku, has recounted how he almost missed the chance to sign the dynamic defender into his academy years ago.

While highlighting the player’s standout qualities, he revealed that he is not surprised by the youngster’s meteoric rise and confidently predicts a bright future ahead.

"To be honest, I’m not surprised at all. Initially, I didn’t want to sign Godwin Emmanuel when he joined us during the COVID period. At the time, we were training in a small village in Ekiti State because everywhere else was shut down. We were literally sneaking around the village just to train," Olatunji-Okuku told Flashscore.com.

"My scout then had told me about a highly rated young player in Kaduna named Prince Amos, who now plays for Vasalunds IF. He said he would bring Prince for assessment, but when they arrived, Godwin came along with him.

"I was furious and asked why another player had been brought without my knowledge. My scout simply said, ‘Chairman, please just watch him play. If you don’t like him, send him back.’ I gave Godwin a chance, and he impressed me immediately.

"His athleticism, speed, and overall presence stood out straight away. I signed him, and since then, he has delivered consistently. He’s comfortable playing both right back and left back, and I knew his qualities were unique. From that moment, I was convinced it was only a matter of time before a bigger club discovered him.

"When he moved to Trelleborgs FF, we finalised the transfer on a Friday, and the very next day, he was named in the starting XI for a Svenska Cupen match. Was I surprised? Not at all. Even when people asked, my answer was the same - I wasn’t surprised.

"If you look at his statistics over the last two seasons in the Superettan, he has been one of the fastest and most consistent players in the league. So, this step forward doesn’t surprise me at all. And I strongly believe this is not his final destination. I know he’s going to go even further.

"His progression is very clear and straightforward. He’s comfortable playing on both the right and left, and players with that kind of versatility, speed, and uniqueness are always in high demand. So, it wouldn’t be a surprise at all to see him in the Super Eagles within the next two years."

Godwin has already begun training with Pardubice and could make his debut when they face Jihlava on January 15th in a mid-season friendly.

Currently, the team sits in 11th place in the Czech First League with 21 points from 19 matches. They will next host Slavia Prague on February 1st at the CFIG Arena.
