The Ghana international Antoine Semenyo becomes only the second Ghanaian to win the Carabao Cup after Michael Essien, as City beat Arsenal 2-0 at Wembley

Semenyo has vowed that the Carabao Cup is just the beginning. Barely ten weeks after joining Manchester City from Bournemouth, the Ghana winger has his first major trophy, and he wants more.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Semenyo said: "First trophy of many, I hope! God's got a plan. It might not work out, you might not know why, but the answer always reveals itself."

The winger admitted that his start at the club has been like a "fairytale", but he also signalled his intent to keep improving and to win more trophies. "I'm excited, I'm happy. And many more to come!" he said.

Manchester City defeated Arsenal 2-0 at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, with a second-half brace from Nico O'Reilly securing City's ninth League Cup title.

Semenyo played the full match on the right flank and was effective throughout, and was a key figure in Manchester City's impressive second-half performance.

He tormented Arsenal left-back Piero Hincapie from the first whistle. Hincapie received a yellow card in the 16th minute and was eventually taken off in the 65th minute, struggling throughout most of his time on the pitch.

After the game, Semenyo was in no mood to hide his satisfaction. "I just have that freedom to do what I want on the wing, get at defenders and cause problems. I had Hincapie running around a little bit, that's just what I do! As soon as he got booked, he was backing off a lot.”

"It's just another game for me. We had a game plan. And if you have the game plan right you'll win. We did that today. We're proud and happy," he added.

A January arrival who has hit the ground running

The victory marks a major milestone in his journey from the lower leagues in England to lifting a major domestic trophy; the rise has been swift and well-earned. It also came against Arsenal, the club he supported growing up.

Since arriving at the Etihad Stadium in the January transfer window, Semenyo has impressed with his pace, direct attacking play, and work rate, registering seven goals and two assists in 16 appearances across all competitions for Manchester City.

His contribution to the Carabao Cup run was particularly significant. He scored the opening goal in City's 2-0 Carabao Cup semi-final first leg success over Newcastle United, tapping in from close range after 53 minutes. He then impressed again in the second leg, a 3-1 triumph at the Etihad, as City booked their place at Wembley.

Only the second Ghanaian to win Carabao Cup

The triumph places Semenyo in elite Ghanaian football company. Semenyo is now the first Ghanaian to have won the competition since Michael Essien last won it with Chelsea in 2007.

Essien was a dominant force in that Chelsea side under Jose Mourinho, winning the League Cup as part of a golden era at Stamford Bridge. Nearly two decades on, Semenyo has joined him in that exclusive group, doing so in only his second month as a City player.

Can Semenyo win the treble?

The Carabao Cup may just be the first chapter of what could be a historic personal season. Manchester City remain in contention in the Premier League, where, despite trailing Arsenal at the top, the gap is far from insurmountable.

Semenyo himself believes the victory can provide the momentum City need. "I think it gives us a boost and confidence… we just have to do our job and hopefully finish off the job," he said.

City are also still in the FA Cup, meaning Semenyo could conceivably end his debut season at the Etihad with a domestic treble. For a player who had never competed in a final before Sunday, the ceiling suddenly looks very, very high.

There is little time to dwell on the moment. Semenyo is expected to join up with the Black Stars squad for the upcoming friendlies against Austria and Germany on March 27th and 30th, respectively.
