Ajax are reportedly set to terminate the loan deal of Liverpool midfielder James McConnell after a disappointing first half of the season.

The 21-year-old James McConnell joined Ajax on a year-long loan deal last summer after former Liverpool assistant John Heitinga was appointed as Ajax's manager. McConnell is said to have joined Ajax solely on Heitinga's recommendation.

Ajax were looking to add an experienced defensive midfielder to the squad after captain Jordan Henderson had his contract at the Amsterdam club terminated by mutual consent.

According to ESPN, McConnell will return to Liverpool in the January transfer window as the midfielder has fallen out of favour with caretaker manager Fred Grim.

During an overall disappointing first half, in which John Heitinga was sacked following a string of bad results, the young McConnell failed to make an impression after appearing in just seven matches for a total of 219 minutes. McConnell's only two starts came against Chelsea (5-1 loss) and FC Twente (3-2 win) in late October.

McConnell's last appearance for Ajax dates back to November 5th, when Ajax lost 3-0 to Galatasaray in what was Heitinga's final game in charge of the Amsterdam giants. The Englishman hasn't featured since, partially due to a lack of match fitness.
