Feyenoord's Igor Paixao, PSV's Ismael Saibari, FC Twente's Sem Steijn, and Ajax's Kenneth Taylor and Davy Klaassen are the five nominees for this year's award. The candidates have been chosen based on Opta statistics and the number of times they were awarded the Man of the Match award.
The award was first given out in 2006 after awards from the players' union and media were merged. Notable past award winners include Johan Cruyff, Luis Suarez, Romario, Ruud Gullit, Marco van Basten, Dirk Kuyt, and Dusan Tadic. PSV's Luuk de Jong won last year's Player of the Year award.
Davy Klaassen also won the award after the 2015/16 season, in which Ajax lost the title on the final day of the season after a 1-1 draw away at De Graafschap.
The Player of the Year award will be given out at the Eredivisie Awards on May 26th.
