Following the start of the Champions League last week, the Europa League took centre stage this Wednesday and Thursday, as several clubs began their quests to pick up some major European silverware.

Which stars stood up for their teams on the big stage? Check out the players below who made our Team of the Round based on our very own internal ratings system.

Goalkeeper

Marco Bizot (Aston Villa) 8.3

After being given the nod by Unai Emery to be Villa's Europa League goalkeeper, Bizot repaid that faith with a clean sheet and Player of the Match display as Aston Villa secured a vital first win of the season at home to Bologna.

The veteran Dutch keeper more than stepped up to the occasion by making seven saves en route to keeping the visitors out, and according to Flashscore's system, he prevented Bologna from scoring 1.44 goals.

Defence

Tyrese Asante (Maccabi Tel Aviv) 8.5

Maccabi were on the back foot for a lot of their game against PAOK, but they managed to come away with a 0-0 draw in Greece, and a lot of that was down to right back Asante.

No player won more aerial duels (three) or tackles (six) than the Dutchman, as well as making a game-high seven clearances. A powerful defensive performance.

Chancel Mbemba (Lille) 8.2

Whilst Lille might not have kept a clean sheet in their hard-fought home win against Brann, Mbemba played a critical role in ensuring the hosts only conceded one goal with an almost faultless defensive display.

The centre-back won all 10 of his ground and aerial duels, made one vital interception and four clearances to help his side to an important opening week victory.

Jakub Kiwior (Porto) 8.5

Porto loanee Kiwior is already proving why he is a fantastic defender with some stellar performances for the Portuguese giants. Similar to Mbemba, Kiwior produced a faultless defensive display to provide the platform for Porto's last-gasp winner away to a strong Salzburg side.

The centre-back rightfully received the highest Flashscore rating in the match after winning all five of his duels, making two tackles, two interceptions and a 93% pass accuracy as he remained a composed figure throughout.

Giannis Kotsiras (Panathinaikos) 8.4

Kotsiras played an important role as Panathinaikos thrashed Young Boys away from home in an impressive European display.

The Greek right-back was commanding in his defensive duties before delivering a teasing cross for Anass Zaroury (more on him later) for the visitors' fourth and final goal of the night

Midfield

Maximilian Eggestein (Freiburg) 8.3

Eggestein is not known for his goal-scoring exploits from midfield. However, he scored a vital winning goal as Freiburg held on to defeat Basel at home on Wednesday night.

The defensive midfielder's headed effort rounded off a solid performance in and out of possession after completing 80% of his passes and winning eight duels.

Bryan Heynen (Genk) 8.7

Heynen might not have been involved in Genk's only goal of the game as the Belgian side silenced the Ibrox, but he still played a central role as Rangers' woes continued.

Heynen was an attacking outlet for the hosts throughout, and he created one big chance which, on another day, would have resulted in an assist. Heynen also put in a big shift out of possession as he won three aerial and ground duels in a tireless effort.

Bilal El Khannouss (Stuttgart) 8.4

Khannouss scored for the second Stuttgart match in a row last night to put the home side 2-0 ahead and in cruise control against Celta Vigo.

That would prove to be crucial as a late Celta Vigo goal wasn't enough for the visitors to get something from the game.

Attack

Antony (Real Betis) 8.4

After signing permanently from Manchester United in the summer, Antony continues to thrive at Betis and is a real favourite amongst the fans. The Brazilian shone as the Spanish outfit snatched a late 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest, scoring the equaliser to go with his assist.

Antony was a constant menace, completing 37 of his 45 passes and six of his seven dribbles. He also did his bit defensively, winning 14 of his 21 duels.

Igor Jesus (Nottingham Forest) 8.5

Starting ahead of last season's top goalscorer, Chris Wood, Igor Jesus will have given new manager Ange Postecoglou some food for thought with a magnificent centre forward performance on Forest's return to Europe.

Signed from Botafogo in the summer, the highly rated Brazilian bagged a brace against Betis, making it four goals in two starts for the club. Despite playing just 64 minutes, he also had six shots and won a game-high six aerial duels, showcasing how lively he was all game.

Anass Zaroury (Panathinaikos) 9.9

Scoring a hat-trick as your side wins 4-1 away from home in Europe will always be worthy of a 9.9 rating (a perfect 10 would have been justified), and that is exactly what Zaroury did as the wide forward put on a clinic at Young Boys on Thursday night

After two goals in six minutes inside the opening half an hour, Zaroury completed his hat-trick with a beautifully controlled volley inside the box to put gloss on a dream European night.

Chances are you’re about to lose.
