An equaliser in the dying moments preserved Dinamo Zagreb’s unbeaten start to the UEFA Europa League (UEL) League Phase and denied Malmö FF a first win as the two sides played out a 1-1 draw at Eleda Stadion.

A weak effort from Gabriel Busanello in the opening minutes would have given Malmö some hope of ending their dismal UEL record of one win in their last 18 matches in the competition proper, but in fact that chance only heralded a dominant half-hour for the visitors.

Their best chance came 17 minutes in when an excellent Arbër Hoxha cross was headed goalwards by Dion Beljo, but was well held by Melker Ellborg, as his defence had to sit deep to deal with constant Dinamo pressure.

Himmelsblått grew into the game as the half wore on but failed to test Ivan Nevistić in the Dinamo goal.

That lack of cutting edge looked to have cost them late in the half, when a Miha Zajc corner was headed powerfully by Sergi Domínguez, but a fingertip save from Ellborg diverted it onto the bar to preserve parity.

Yet, it was the visitors left ruing missed chances, as with the final action of the half, Malmö grabbed an unlikely lead when Oscar Lewicki met Otto Rosengren’s corner, and his deflected header was just beyond the reach of Nevistić.

After the smash-and-grab ending to the first half, the home side almost doubled their advantage in the second minute after the restart, when Hugo Bolin worked his way into the penalty area and forced a smart reaction stop from Nevistić.

The Croatian side looked to quickly reassert themselves, but no sooner had Beljo’s header flown over the bar, Malmö were down the other end, setting up Kenan Busuladžić for a glorious chance that drifted wide.

Yet just as in the first half, the vast majority of the action took place deep in the home side’s territory, but excellent defensive organisation from Anes Mravac’s side limited Plavi’s threat.

In the final 10 minutes, a Josip Mišić chance was ballooned into Row Z, before a promising counter-attack ended with Mounsef Bakrar shooting straight at Ellborg.

But Dinamo wouldn’t give up, and deep in added time they drew level when Bakrar was played in and he dinked the ball over the goalkeeper, and Busanello’s best efforts couldn’t prevent the ball crossing the line.

The late equaliser leaves the Swedish side with just one UEL home win in six, while Dinamo preserve their record of just one away loss in all competitions this season, despite surrendering first place in the standings.
