Erik Lamela has ended his career as a footballer after agreeing to terminate his contract with AEK Athens, as the former Tottenham player begins a new phase as Matias Almeyda's assistant on the Sevilla coaching staff.

The skilful Argentinian winger, who wore the Sevilla shirt for three seasons since 2021 and was crucial to the club's Europa League title in 2023, has hung up his boots, accepting the proposal made to him by his compatriot.

Trained at River Plate, Lamela made the leap to Italy at a very young age to join Roma, who paid around 17 million euros for the talented left-footed player in 2011.

Two seasons later, he joined Tottenham for a fee of around £30 million, where he remained until he was part of the deal that saw Bryan Gil join Spurs and him move to Sevilla.

His Rabona goal against Arsenal in 2021 won him the Puskas award for goal of the season.

After highs and lows in La Liga, the Argentine international moved to Athens, where he played last season, scoring six goals in 31 official appearances.

And now, having played his last game in May, he has decided to retire as a player and join Almeyda's coaching staff.
