The former long-term president of FC Porto, Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa, died on Saturday after a long period of illness. He was 87 and had been battling prostate cancer.

Fighting prostate cancer, Pinto da Costa's health had deteriorated in recent days, as had been revealed by sources close to the former Porto boss.

The last time he was seen in public was on October 27th, when he presented the book Azul até ao Fim, a collection of memoirs.

The successor to Americo de Sa, Pinto da Costa led the club from April 1982 17th, a date from which he witnessed 2,587 trophies won across 21 sports, 69 of which were in men's senior football.

He was defeated in the April 2024 elections by André Villas-Boas, the current president of the club.

Pinto da Costa was arguably the most decorated president in the history of sport.
