Why Paris Saint-Germain aren't having it all their own way in Ligue 1 this season

Back on September 22, Marseille's 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain, whilst notable, would largely have been dismissed as a blip for the serial Ligue 1 winners.

After all, Luis Enrique's side enjoyed 68% possession at Stade Velodrome, had 12 shots to Marseille's five and exhibited an almost perfect 95% pass completion collectively.

PSG still lead the pack in France

Those types of games/results can and do occur sometimes, though what's transpired since might be of more concern.

Notwithstanding that the Parisiens demolished Bayer Leverkusen 7-2 in the Champions League as well as beating a resurgent Barcelona 2-1, they've stuttered in the league.

Draws against Lille, Lorient and Strasbourg have derailed the juggernaut somewhat, to the extent that PSG only hold a two-point lead over Marseille and Lens, with Lille, Monaco and Lyon only two points further back.

Whilst plenty of the season remains of course, the fact that PSG aren't already streaking away from the pack gives each of those clubs within striking distance genuine hope that they can at least hang onto the reigning champions' coattails, and be in a position to overhaul them when the chance presents itself.

De Zerbi has Marseille on song

From Marseille's point of view, no one should be in the least bit surprised that Roberto De Zerbi has the squad playing at its swashbuckling best.

25 goals scored is the most in the division this season, and Mason Greenwood has top-scored with seven of those.  Only Rennes' Esteban Lepaul (eight) and Strasbourg's Joaquin Panichelli (nine) have scored more in the league than the Englishman this season.

Four of Greenwood's came in the match against Le Havre this season, when 'De Zerbi ball' was in full effect. 11 shots on target, 70% possession, 621 passes compared to just 174 from their visitors and a 95% collective pass completion.

That type of output has often been the story of Marseille's season so far, but the most valid question is whether they'll be able to keep it up as we go deeper into the campaign.

Strength in depth will be key

For example, they did finish second to PSG last season, but actually ended a whopping 19 points behind them. They were closer in points terms to Brest, down in ninth place.

With Emerson and Benjamin Pavard as marauding wing-backs and other experienced professionals such as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg also in situ, there is a great balance to the Marseille squad.

If they can stay relatively injury-free, who's to say that they won't be there or thereabouts at the end of the campaign?

PSG clearly can't be discounted from any French title race of course, because they've been there and done that on multiple occasions.

The hallmark of this current side is the swagger and panache with which they've played in a number of their matches, and just how well-drilled Luis Enrique has his squad.

It's that strength in depth which sets them apart and, perhaps, hints at any pretenders to the throne having to recruit well in the January transfer window to help push on in the second half of the campaign.

Lille and Monaco have outscored PSG

With 23 goals apiece in the league this season, Lille and Monaco have also outscored PSG to date.

A couple of big wins notwithstanding, Lille's undoubted highlight would've been holding the Parisiens to a recent draw, with Ethan Mbappe scoring against his old side and in front of brother, Kylian, who was celebrating in the stands.

Bruno Genesio's side have been workmanlike in many of their matches, though the signing of Olivier Giroud is yet to really bear fruit.

The French legend will still point to being Lille's oldest ever scorer at 38 years, 10 months and 18 days old however, after scoring in his first game for his new club.

Ansu Fati reborn at Monaco

At Monaco, Ansu Fati has, finally, been reborn.

It's taken the striker an absolute age to find the form that he displayed at Barcelona, but with five goals already for his new club, he's spearheading the charge up the table.

With creditable draws against Man City and Tottenham already in this season's Champions League, the side from the Principality are going as well in Europe as they are domestically.

A recent and unexpected league loss to Paris FC stopped them from moving into second place; however, Monaco have looked impressive in many of their matches recently.

Maghnes Akliouche, Takumi Minamino and Folarin Balogun have supplemented Fati's excellence up front, whilst Sebastien Pocognoli's solid midfield and back three have made Monaco difficult to play against.

With PSG having to play Lyon, Monaco and Lille in three of their next seven league games, things could start to get very interesting in the French title race indeed...
