James Maddison took to social media to express his frustration with the refereeing in Tottenham’s London derby against West Ham.

The attacking midfielder reacted to Cristian Romero’s goal being disallowed for a foul by Micky van de Ven and criticised the officials for what he saw as a poor start to the new season.

The 27-year-old didn’t restrict his criticism to a single incident, claiming that both VAR and on-field referees have been “an absolute shocker” at the start of the season.

“Honestly the referees & VAR have had an absolute shocker of a start to the season. If that goal is disallowed for a foul you will never ever see a corner be taken without referee blowing for something ever again.”

Spurs will be hoping for better fortune with officiating when they kick off their Champions League campaign against Villarreal on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, West Ham - still reeling from recent setbacks - resume their Premier League journey with a home clash against Crystal Palace on September 20th.
