Barcelona looking to alter terrible record in West London as Chelsea await in UCL

Tuesday evening sees the return of the Champions League and LaLiga giants Barcelona head to West London and a date with former UCL foes, Chelsea.

Who can forget that 2009 semi-final at Stamford Bridge, which provoked outrage amongst the home support but was most memorable for the Iniestazo that took the Catalans to Rome.

Identical UCL records in 2025/26

Or the 2005 game when Lionel Messi announced himself to the wider footballing public and Asier Del Horno was red-carded for a desperate challenge on the Argentinian.

What about the 2012 semi-final when Fernando Torres rounded Victor Valdes to secure the Blues a spot in that season's final... another standout memory from a fixture that almost always seems to provide real drama.

This matchday five game is also the only one that is being played between two teams that were drawn from Pot 1, and they couldn't be better matched.

After four games in the competition this season, both have won two, drawn one and lost one, giving them seven points apiece. Barcelona are in 11th place by virtue of a slightly better goal difference, and Chelsea are in 12th.

Barcelona's poor recent record vs Chelsea

It might be a surprise to note that Barcelona have actually only won one of the last nine games against Chelsea, so they might find they're up against it again versus the team that is second in the Premier League table.

Not since 2006 have the Catalans triumphed over the Blues at Stamford Bridge, their only win in the last eight attempts in West London, five of which were losses.

Barca have also won just once in the last nine matches against Chelsea, home or away, and that victory was back in March 2018 at Camp Nou (3-0).

Hansi Flick's side could, however, take heart from their last performance in England when Marcus Rashford's brace saw Newcastle put to the sword at St. James' Park.

Decent results in England

That was one of six victories from Barca's last nine matches away at Premier League opponents in the competition, with their only two defeats coming in 2016 (3-1 loss to Man City) and 2019 (4-0 semi-final second-leg loss to Liverpool).

Rashford has five goal contributions in his four UCL games this season and, if selected, should he have recovered from the illness that saw him miss the weekend win over Athletic Club, will surely want to continue with that type of output to keep himself in England manager Thomas Tuchel's thoughts.

Oddly enough, LaLiga teams haven't fared too well against English opposition of late, with that win against Newcastle the only one in the last 10 matches between Premier League and Spanish top-flight sides.

Remarkably, since Barca's win against the Magpies, English teams haven't conceded a single goal in subsequent matches against their Spanish counterparts.

Arsenal beat Atletico Madrid 4-0, Liverpool narrowly came through against Atleti's local rivals, Real, 1-0. Man City earned a 2-0 victory over Villarreal, whilst a similar scoreline saw Newcastle triumph over Athletic Club.

Is Hansi Flick Barcelona's secret weapon?

Conversely, in 36 games when managing Bayern Munich and Barcelona in the competition, Hansi Flick's side have always managed to score at least once.

Cole Palmer's recent absence doesn't appear to have hampered Enzo Maresca in terms of him ensuring Chelsea continue to get positive results, though the England man is likely to be a big miss for this one.

Estevao, who has top-scored for the Blues in the Champions League, might therefore be relied upon to test Barca's incredibly high defensive line, which has looked beatable in certain recent matches.

With the youngest starting XI in the competition during 2025/26, that might also be to Chelsea's disadvantage, however. Although the Catalans have plenty of young players in their squad too, it's also sprinkled with the requisite experience.

Home advantage could also be crucial, albeit Flick will ensure that his side are brave and plays on the front foot as always. If they do down, they'll do so fighting all the way.

Raphinha could be key in West London

Raphinha made a cameo appearance at the weekend after being sidelined through injury, and if the Brazilian plays any part in this match, he could be the man to watch.

Reece James will certainly have his hands full down Chelsea's right side, whether it's Raphinha or Rashford raiding, and Marc Cucurella will know all about Lamine Yamal's trickery on the opposite flank.

The match is likely to be won and lost in midfield, however, and whoever can take control of the central areas will dictate the pace and pattern of the match.

With only three more games left in the league stage after the outcome of Tuesday's encounter, both sides must try and get three points on the board, as that will give them the best chance of finishing in the top eight teams ahead of the knockout rounds early next year.
