Grit and Osula magic: How 10-man Newcastle snapped Man Utd's impressive unbeaten run

Manchester United, still unbeaten under Michael Carrick as they walked out at Newcastle's St. James' Park on Wednesday evening, will have understood the importance of gaining a win at a ground they'd not taken three points from since their visit in 2020.

The Red Devils had been flying high under their former player, and the 11-game unbeaten streak, which began under Ruben Amorim, had seen them steadily move up the table and into the Champions League places.

Europe in mind for both teams

The Magpies, currently enjoying a run in European football's premier tournament, with Catalan giants, Barcelona, up next for Eddie Howe's men, hadn't been as purposeful in the Premier League and had started the match way down in 13th place.

Getting back into Europe next season has looked increasingly like a pipe dream for the Geordies as the weeks have ticked by, so they too were under no illusions regarding what a win would do for their fortunes.

Oddly enough, Wednesday night's meeting was the first in the English top-flight since February 1985 when both clubs last had English managers in opposition (Jack Charlton and Ron Atkinson). That game ended in a 1-1 draw, a result which would suit neither currently.

Carrick wouldn't have wanted reminding that Man Utd were winless in six Premier League matches that had kicked off at 21.15 CET (D3, L3) since a 4-3 win at Wolves in February 2024, whilst Howe would've been aware that he'd managed more home league games against the Red Devils without losing as Newcastle manager (W3, D1) than any other manager in Magpies' history.

Lively opening from the Magpies

Aaron Ramsdale, one of two changes for the hosts, was making his first league start since the 1-0 Boxing Day defeat against Man Utd.

He'd conceded at least one goal in 26 of his last 27 league appearances, including all seven for Newcastle, meaning he's made the most appearances for the Magpies without a clean sheet in Premier League history.

A lively opening saw the hosts take the initiative, and their 10 touches in the United box in the opening 15 minutes is their most on record (since 2008/09).

Four chances came and went for Harvey Barnes (two), Sandro Tonali and Anthony Elanga, and though Barnes appeared particularly industrious, the truth is he was on the periphery for the time he was on the pitch, completing just nine accurate passes.

United start to dictate

As the visitors came more into the game, Casemiro showed the benefit of his extensive experience, and his seven line-breaking passes in 33 minutes were more than any other player on the pitch.

Along with Bruno Fernandes' usual creativity - he'd go on to create eight chances in the game, at least five more than anyone else - the visitors looked as comfortable as they had at this venue for some time.

92 chances created across the season for the Portuguese midfielder - at least 36 more than any other top-flight player - evidenced his importance to the team once again.

Notwithstanding that, he or his colleagues didn't actually have a shot on target during the opening 40 minutes.

Manic injury time

The real action began in an extended period of stoppage time at the end of the half. Jacob Ramsey's second yellow card, given for simulation in trying to win a penalty, reduced Newcastle to 10 men, but almost immediately the hosts were given a spot kick when Fernandes took down Anthony Gordon.

Gordon's first touch in Newcastle's box was followed by his second, a penalty dispatched with ease straight down the centre, making him the first Englishman to score nine penalties in a season for a Premier League club in all competitions since Cole Palmer in 2023/24 for Chelsea.

More drama was to follow before the whistle as Fernandes whipped in a free-kick, which Casemiro headed beyond Ramsdale. A 14th assist for Bruno in 2025/26 puts him just one behind David Beckham as the player who has assisted most goals in a season for Man Utd (15 in 1999/00).

As the second half developed, the tempo began to drop, and it was the 11 men of United who were struggling to stay in the game thanks to Newcastle's more physical output and collective coherence.

Kieran Trippier, in particular, was putting in a real shift at the back for the hosts, with 10 clearances and two interceptions made, and three of four tackles won by the end of proceedings.

Yoro goes close

With 15 to play, another sensational Bruno delivery found Leny Yoro, and whilst the Frenchman's powerful downward header was on target, it was straight at Ramsdale and marked an 11th attempt at goal for the defender in his United career, with him still yet to score in the Premier League.

The visitors' collective 73% possession in the latter stages appeared to suggest a dominance of the game, though Newcastle were holding firm.

With Trippier and Joelinton contesting 41 one-on-ones alone, it was a real backs-against-the-wall effort from the Magpies.

As players tired, a raft of late substitutions from both sides wasn't a surprise, and William Osula's 85th-minute introduction would prove to be the most fruitful before the end of the game.

Osula wins it at the death

United again came on strong, and Joshua Zirkzee's only contribution in his short time on the pitch was to fire in a wicked effort that required a world-class save from Ramsdale to keep the score level.

Just over a minute later, the game's defining moment came courtesy of Trippier and Osula.

The latter passed to his full-back before haring off towards the Gallowgate End. Trippier's ball was just kept in, and Osula just kept his footing before executing a couple of step-overs and a curled finish that Senne Lammens could only gaze at as the ball hit the net.

Perhaps uniquely, aside from the three passes he made, Osula's other six touches in the game all came during the run in the lead-up to the goal. Now that's how you make an impact as a substitute!
