Manchester United have been planning to sign two central midfielders across 2026, but at this stage their most realistic option appears to be a short-term deal.

The change of head coach from Ruben Amorim to Michael Carrick has also led to adjustments in both team shape and personnel.

As part of that shift, Bruno Fernandes is now operating further forward, while Kobbie Mainoo has returned to the centre of midfield.

United also have experienced options in Manuel Ugarte, Casemiro and Mason Mount, while a number of younger players continue to be introduced into the first-team setup.

Despite those options, new names are being linked with potential moves. Ruben Neves, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Wilfred Ndidi have all been mentioned as possible signings as United assess the market.

At a time when United have just 16 matches remaining this season, the prospect of loan deals seems to be an area of discussion. Any such moves would go against the plan that had originally been put in place for this transfer window.

United had hoped to make a key midfield signing for the future, and the failure to land players of the calibre of Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba or Elliot Anderson was one of the factors that led to Amorim’s breakdown with the Old Trafford hierarchy.

Carrick has since been involved in discussions over squad planning, with the possibility of new additions forming part of those talks.

Ndidi, currently on the books at Besiktas, is the latest player to be mentioned after AC Milan’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek was made available and linked with a move to Manchester.

Meanwhile, Al Hilal midfielder Neves is being touted around the Premier League, with United among the clubs to have been made aware of the terms required for a potential deal.
