Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe admitted confidence is key ahead of facing Brentford on Saturday night but played down doubts about his future.

The Magpies will host Brentford after consecutive away defeats to Manchester City and Liverpool.

Howe concedes the double setback has hit his players and says the confidence and self-belief of Newcastle going into the game will be crucial.

"Losing is such a difficult feeling; you have to deal with the defeat. You have to evolve. We are trying to do that in a quick turnaround. The main thing is the players enter the new game in a positive frame of mind," he said on Friday morning.

"Every game is a must-win game. Brentford have been really strong this year. They have clear strengths. They have done well to bounce back from departures this year."

Howe was asked about the dip in form of centre-forward Nick Woltemade. The German international, says his manager, is now having to adjust his game as defenders learn more about him.

"He is young, a new league, and he started so well. Everyone expected that to continue," said Howe.

"He is getting to grips with the league, intensity. Teams understand his game, and he has to find solutions the other way. There is work for him to do. He has done everything with a great attitude."

Howe was upbeat on the fitness of Bruno Guimaraes, with the club captain missing the Cup semifinal defeat at City.

"He did a training session on Wednesday and felt pretty good. Fingers crossed he’ll be fit," said the manager, who also offered an update on fellow midfielder Lewis Miley.

"We find out today. I am not waiting on an update on him. Not a serious injury, and I hope he will be back pretty soon."

Tough few weeks

Referring to recent results, Howe insists the scorelines do not reflect how Newcastle have performed.

"I think, naturally, you can lose focus on the games that we've had. Paris, Liverpool and Man City for any team away from home in a really short period of time - all back off three-game, six-day weeks, so the lads were going into them not in the best physical condition - for any team that will be difficult," he explained.

"Watching those games, the scorelines look pretty bad, but I think the games were very different; all could have been different.

"We have to acknowledge that, and we have to protect the confidence of the players because if you carry that baggage into the next game, then that can be difficult. We need the players to play these games with clear heads and feeling good about themselves."

Howe also stated: "We are trying to do that in a really quick turnaround while also acknowledging the strengths of the performance and where we need to improve.

"The main thing is the players entering the next game in a positive frame of mind, that is so important, so how we deal with each defeat we've had in the last week is crucial in our success going forward."

Stepping down?

Before ending his presser, Howe was asked if he had a message for fans left disappointed by their Carabao Cup semi-final defeat against Manchester City. There is a growing sense inside the Toon's support that the club is now meandering with little direction.

"My message to them is that we are fighting... and we will give it our all to try to get a positive outcome," he responded.

He was also asked about reports that he could step down in the summer.

"That is a surprise to me," Howe replied. "As I said to the question earlier, I give my best every day to the football club, to all the players and staff, to try and be the best version of myself to inspire the team to win games.

"That is the only thing in my thoughts. I don't tend to look too far ahead. I try and prepare and plan for the club to move forward in every sense. My individual future is not really relevant."
