The value of Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White as Man City circle for £70m man

With Sean Dyche the latest manager to be sacked at Nottingham Forest, it might be about time for Evangelos Marinakis to take a long, hard look at the squad before wielding his axe once more.

After all, when Nuno Espirito Santo, Ange Postecoglou and Dyche all can't get a tune out of an underperforming bunch, it's only right that questions need to be asked elsewhere rather than having responsibility for the Tricky Trees' travails falling squarely on the shoulders of each manager.

Forest could soon be in the bottom three

Marinakis, it seems, is a 'hire 'em and fire 'em' kind of owner, and that does nothing for the stability of the club in general, ergo the first team.

A team that now finds themselves in 17th position in the Premier League table, just three points and one place above West Ham.

The Hammers, now managed, of course, by Nuno, have found a belated run of form to drag themselves to the brink of getting out of the bottom three for the first time in an age, and a four-goal swing from their game at home to Bournemouth and Forest's visit to Liverpool next weekend will see both clubs swap places.

With only 11 games to play after those respective fixtures, Forest's big-name players could be forgiven for starting to get itchy feet.

Morgan Gibbs-White has consistently been one of the Midlands-based club's top performers, with his seven goals and four assists second only to Igor Jesus in all competitions for Forest in 2025/26.

Back in October 2024, he became the first player from his club to play for England since 1997, making his debut under Lee Carsley in a 2-0 Nations League win for the Three Lions over the Republic of Ireland.

Gibbs-White's star continues to shine

His star has continued to shine since then, with it now being reported that Manchester City are again showing serious interest in his services.

Although Gibbs-White only signed a new deal with Forest last year, it's understood that he was flattered by potential City interest back then, and if his current employers do ultimately end up going down, it's likely that his sale would be authorised for in the region of £60m-£70m.

So, what would City, or any other potentially interested parties, be getting for their money?

For a start, his work-rate and desire aren't in question, and along with Elliot Anderson, Gibbs-White would appear to remain one of the busier players on the pitch during games.

Indeed, his 71 total shots at goal this season are the same number as Igor Jesus's, and at least 23 more than any other player in the Forest squad.

Only Neco Williams (27) has taken more shots from outside the box than Gibbs-White's 26, and 119 touches in the opposition area is only bettered by Jesus.

53 dribbles attempted also places him within the top four Forest players in this regard during the current campaign, whilst Hudson-Odoi remains the only teammate to top Gibbs-White's 40 chances created from open play.

He excels in regard to pass completion, with an 81.9% showing across all competitions this season. His 51 successful lay-offs are the best return at the club, and his six completed through balls are just one behind Anderson's top-scoring seven.

Energy, desire and work-rate

It won't surprise anyone to see that Gibbs-White also has over a century of ball recoveries to his name in the current campaign, either, and only Jesus, Williams and Anderson have attempted more than his 294 one-on-one duels.

If all of the aforementioned stats weren't impressive enough, of those outfield players who have made 20 or more tackles this season, no one comes close to Gibbs-White's 70% success rate.

It's that kind of energy, determination, will to win and all-round quality that clearly appeals to Pep Guardiola, and which would be sorely missed at Forest.

More so if they are relegated, as they'll need to replace like-for-like to climb straight back out of the Championship at the first attempt.

Going down or staying up, Gibbs-White can still hold his head high

Given that one can't suggest anything other than the utmost professionalism from Gibbs-White, even in this most underwhelming of seasons, supporters should give him the courtesy and respect he deserves should he decide that a move might be in his best interests.

He, perhaps as much as anyone, has done their level best to keep Forest in the division, and even now doesn't appear willing to accept that his club might be on a slippery slope that they just can't get off.

The sense of invincibility at this point is palpable, but despite everything, Morgan Gibbs-White is one player who can still proudly puff his chest out and wear his shirt with pride.

Forest's fate will ultimately be decided within another dozen Premier League games, and only then will one of the best players in the club's recent history decide whether The City Ground is to remain his home, or if it's time for City et al to benefit from the fruits of his ample labours.
