Why the outcome of Tottenham vs Liverpool is vital for both Slot and Frank

Both Thomas Frank and Arne Slot are managers under pressure at their respective clubs, and if the fates of past managers are anything to go by, the Dutchman will be given longer to turn Liverpool around than the Dane will at Tottenham.

Therefore, Saturday evening's match between the two sides takes on a little extra significance.

Spurs have been poor at home

Although they've won the last two Champions League fixtures to be played in North London, beaten Brentford at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and drawn with Newcastle in their last two Premier League home fixtures, Spurs haven't been great in front of their own supporters this season.

Losses to Fulham, Aston Villa, Bournemouth, and Chelsea, a draw with Man Utd, and another with Wolves (one of only two points the Midlanders have earned this season) don't bode well for the Lilywhites.

Liverpool, away from Anfield, have let in three at Leeds, Brentford and Man City (two losses, one draw), as well as losing at Chelsea and Crystal Palace.

They too have fared better in the Champions League, and perhaps never more so than in their most recent away fixture when they walked away from San Siro with a 1-0 win over Inter.

Interestingly, Liverpool's last 17 away matches in the Premier League have seen them either concede two or more goals (11 times) or keep a clean sheet (six).

Three points a must for both sides

In terms of league positions before the start of play, the Reds find themselves in seventh on 26 points, with Tottenham down in 11th on 22 points, just four above Nottingham Forest  (who beat them last time out) in 16th.

Having beaten Liverpool just twice in their last 25 Premier League meetings (October 2017 (4-1) and September 2023 (2-1)), losing 17 of them, and also having conceded at least once in 25 of the last 26 fixtures (including in all of the last 19), something has got to change from the hosts' point of view on Saturday.

Particularly when you consider that last season the Lilywhites were humbled 6-3 and 5-1 by Slot's Liverpool, games in which the Reds had an astonishing 49 shots in total, albeit they were playing much better then than they are now.

If the visitors were able to score another five goals on Saturday, it would be the first time since between September 2012 and December 2013 (against Norwich) that Liverpool would have managed to score at least five in three consecutive fixtures against the same opponent.

To date, no other team in Premier League history has completed such a feat.

The top-scoring EPL clash

With 206 goals scored in the fixture too - including 21 across the last three league meetings, and at least three in 14 of the last 16 games - Tottenham vs Liverpool remains the top-scoring Premier League clash.

Spurs fans won't need reminding either that their side have conceded at least three goals in four defeats this season, with only 2014 (six games) and 1997 (five games) being years in which they've lost more games by conceding at least three goals.

With 10 losses at home already in 2025, they've already equalled their worst-ever years (1994 and 2003) in that respect. Lose one more, and Frank will have that dubious honour on his list as well.

The Dane may point to the fact that Tottenham still have many injuries to key players to contend with, and that was something that ultimately hamstrung Ange Postecoglou.

Tottenham relying on Richarlison?

Much is likely to therefore depend on Richarlison continuing his good form against the Reds.

The Brazilian has been involved in more goals (seven - four goals, three assists) against Liverpool than any other team in the English top-flight, albeit the goals he has personally scored against the Reds have all come at Anfield.

The Lilywhites will also perhaps hang onto the fact that they did beat Liverpool in North London this year, way back in January in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg, though the 1-0 victory soon evaporated in the second leg at Anfield.

Alexander Isak would ultimately score the goal that saw Liverpool beaten in the final of that competition, and now, of course, he's attempting to resurrect his career with the Reds after an awful start.

Despite having scored six goals in four appearances against Tottenham, however, it would be something of a surprise to see Slot drop the in-form Hugo Ektitike to appease others.

The pressure is already on

With no Mohamed Salah either, after he left for Africa Cup of Nations duty with Egypt, the Reds' front line could feature an often-overlooked Federico Chiesa alongside Ekitike.

One thing's for sure... the pressure is sure to ramp up on the manager whose team happens to be on the receiving end of a defeat.

Both are already at the stage where not even a decent performance would be acceptable if the result goes against them. The game is that important.
