The next generation of Australian footballers took the continent by storm at the weekend and this reporter is getting uncontrollably excited about the 2026 World Cup as a result.

Irankunda's ball striking only getting better with age

19-year-old Nestory Irankunda has made an enormous splash in his maiden English voyage.

After assisting a first half goal for teammate Luca Kjerrumgaard in a season-opening 2-1 win over QPR, Irankunda earned his team Championship points with free kicks in successive weeks, with the Hornets priced as outsiders on both occasions.

Check out his addictive cartwheel celebration below, which was wheeled out more than once in an Adelaide United kit during his time here.

Irankunda heads into the international break, during which the Socceroos will play a two-legged home and away series against New Zealand for the 'Soccer Ashes', high on life.

Those of you familiar with his background wouldn't be so surprised to see him becoming known in England as a free kick weapon, especially when he kicked off his A-League Men's career at age 15 with a stellar set piece.

Bos from outside the box!

Point Cook's very own Jordy Bos opened the scoring from a corner in a thumping 4-0 win for Dutch giants Feyenoord as they won successive Rotterdam derbies.

The 22-year-old earned an outstanding player score of 8.4 out of 10 from the Flashscore ratings.

Zac Sapsford completes the trifecta

Off the back of a breakout season in the 2024/25 A-League with Western Sydney Wanderers, 23-year-old Zac Sapsford scored his third goal in seven games for new club Dundee United as they defeated bitter rivals Dundee FC to move up to fourth place in the Scottish Premiership.

That follows goals in the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Conference League against both UNA Strassen and SK Rapid before they crashed over at the penultimate hurdle.

“It was a huge gamble starting Zac because he only trained on Saturday," said Dundee United head coach Jim Goodwin after the match.

He took a really heavy knock in the Rapid Vienna game and hasn’t trained since.

But he’s such a strong character and these are the type of games he came to Scotland to play in.

There was no way he was going to be anything but fit as far as he was concerned. He was only 70 per cent fit, to be honest."

But wait, there's more from the football scene...

Whilst not on the scoresheet, 21-year-old Alessandro Circati earned his best player rating (7.4) of the season in a Parma kit for a defensive performance that saw him register a game-high three interceptions as well as five clearances.

He was hailed by the club's social media account for his impact on the 1-1 draw with Atalanta

In case you missed it, Garang Kuol is set to get some game time this season after heading from Newcastle to Sparta Prague for about a million bucks according to reports.

Kuol couldn't break into the first team despite scoring five goals for the U21 side, and as someone who has been to Prague to visit Flashscore's global headquarters, I can safely say it is an excellent move for Kuol from a lifestyle perspective. Hodně štěstí, pan Kuol!

Piastri joins some illustrious company

For the first time in his three-year career, Oscar Piastri has recorded Formula 1's 'grand slam' - which is to start a race at the front of the grid, win the race and record the fastest lap of the race along the way.

Having never previously podiumed at Zandvoort, Piastri executed a flawless race whilst teammate and championship rival Lando Norris literally saw his title bid go up in smoke.

Piastri became the 27th driver in Formula 1 history to achieve the grand slam and only the second Australian after Jack Brabham.

He now has a 34-point lead over Norris at the top of the Driver's Championship, which he very humbly described after the race as "not very comfortable".

And then there were one in Flushing Meadows...

World number eight Alex De Minaur is the only remaining Australian representative in either the men's or women's singles at the US Open after seven others crashed out either at the weekend or late last week.

De Minaur caught some media attention when making a thinly veiled complaint about playing his third round game against Germany's Daniel Altmaier on the lower-capacity Court 17 and, late on Monday night or early on Tuesday night, will face Switzerland's rank no. 435 Leandro Riedl in the fourth round.

In the third round of the men's singles draw, there were losses for the Aussie quartet of Alexei Popyrin, Adam Walton, Tristan Schoolkate and Jordan Thompson. Maya Joint also crashed out during the third round, whilst Priscilla Hon and world number 18 Daria Kasatkina exited during the fourth round.

Chances are you’re about to lose.
