In the release, Fiorentina mentioned that Commisso's passing came "after a long period of medical treatment." He leaves behind his wife Catherine, children Giuseppe and Marisa, as well as sisters Italia and Raffaelina.
Commisso took over as La Viola's owner in the summer of 2019, buying the team from the Della Valle brothers. During his time as the club's owner, Fiorentina reached a Coppa Italia final back-to-back UEFA Conference League finals, plus a semi-final.
Born in Marina di Gioiosa Ionica, he spent most of his life in the United States. The graduate of Columbia was best known for founding Mediacom, a television network provider, in 1995. Commisso has also owned renowned American side New York Cosmos since 2017.
"His love for Fiorentina was the greatest gift he gave himself, spending unforgettable days with the boys and girls of the youth teams, always offering a caring gesture and a smile to everyone," Fiorentina stated in the press release. "Tireless, he worked until his final days, dedicating himself to his companies, Mediacom and Fiorentina, and to their future."
There were recent rumours that Commisso was looking to sell the Florence-based club, in part due to a disappointing season which currently sees them sit in the relegation zone in the Serie A. However, the 76-year-old denied this, saying that Fiorentina are "not for sale."
Fiorentina are set to take on Bologna away on Sunday, though it remains to be seen whether the game will go as scheduled.
