In our monthly feature, Flashscore shines the light on the best players in world football to see what has made them stand out from the crowd. Using cutting-edge stats as well as our player ratings system, we will delve into the numbers to see why they are performing so well. For February, despite competition from Harry Kane, the winner is Federico Dimarco.

Across six games in a busy month, the Italian defender notched an 8.4 rating, much in part to his goals and assists, which saw his side tighten their grip on the Serie A lead.

Creating chances

Dimarco's incredible form stretched prior to February. This calendar year has been standout from the wing-back, providing incredible attacking output. Across the last month, he has six of the team's 10 assists in the league and in Europe - no other player has more than one.

It's unsurprising then that he also has the highest amount of chances created from open play in the time period, with 12. From set plays, he has 16, showing he is also a menace with the dead ball.

It's also in defence where he proves his worth. As a wing-back, one of the game's hardest roles to perfect, he has to not only provide an attacking outlet, but also track back and cover the wide areas.

In the month of February, he won the ball 24 times on the left wing, whilst having no errors that led to goals. This is no surprise - taking a look at his heatmap from their latest win over Genoa, Dimarco spent the majority of the game in the opposition half, getting the best opportunity to show his creative intent.

In the game, he netted a volley in the 31st minute - putting his tally to 10 goal involvements in his last six games.

Continuing to shine

Dimarco has been an Inter stalwart since breaking into the first team in 2014. A product of their academy, he spent the 2010s building his footballing career with a move to Sion in Switzerland, as well as a host of loan deals, before being made the starting wide player for Inter in 2021. Since then, he has not looked back and has become one of their star players.

As a child, his dream was to play for the first team of Inter. Now realised, he is showing everyone just how important he is to Christian Chivu's side.

Inter are top of Serie A by 10 points with 11 games to go, which is papering over the cracks of their Champions League exit to Bodo/Glimt.

But Dimarco can be one player from that losing tie who comes out of it with credit, having missed the 3-1 defeat in Norway, before putting in a player of the match performance in the second leg, as his side went down 2-1 at the San Siro.

Former Italy international Beppe Bergomi told La Gazzetta dello Sport recently: “Dimarco’s value will therefore only be judged at the end of his career.

"Today, we can say that in terms of his ability, the way that he crosses, the way he shoots on goal and the amount of assists he provides, he is one of the greatest in the world.”

Season records incoming

If Dimarco continues in this rich vein of form this season, the single-season assist record will be broken in a matter of games. So far during the Serie A campaign, he already has 13, just three behind record holder Papu Gomez, who set the mark with 16 whilst playing for Atalanta in the 2019/20 season.

This, again, shows just what a vital part the left-sided player is to his side. Against Genoa, as is customary with Inter, they attacked down his flank nearly 50% of the time during the win, giving their most influential player plenty of opportunities to create big chances, which he does regularly.

On the ground

Flashscore spoke to our Italian editor, Massimilliano Macaluso, who explained what is making the player special for Inter: "It seemed that Federico Dimarco was a brainwave of Simone Inzaghi and that his performances might decline after the coach’s departure last summer.

"Instead, his attacking productivity under Cristian Chivu has improved even further: the full-back has been involved in as many as 20 of his team’s goals (with some games to play), mainly thanks to his trademark speciality - assists.

"In the past 20 years in Serie A, only Massimo Oddo managed similar numbers at Hellas Verona - and that was helped by his efficiency from the penalty spot.

"With Denzel Dumfries sidelined for a long stretch and Alessandro Bastoni providing balance on the left, Dimarco became the main reference point in FC Internazionale Milano’s attacking play, even if he's only a talented full back.

"The team increasingly relies on the creativity of their number 32, who may be even more decisive - because of his technical and, above all, tactical point of view - than the major leader of the team: Lautaro Martinez.

"Add to that the fact that Dimarco was born in Milan and developed through Inter’s youth academy - before gaining experience with Ascoli Calcio, Empoli, Sion, Parma and Hellas Verona - and it becomes clear just how representative he is of the team currently leading Serie A, getting closer and closer to another league title."
