A turbo weekend of Turkish Super Lig action saw the title race continue at breakneck pace, with Galatasaray continuing their unbeaten start but a second-half Fenerbahce frenzy keeping them within touching distance of their rivals.

Galatasaray were looking to bounce back from a pair of disappointing draws when they hosted Konyaspor on Saturday evening.

It was imperative that they returned to winning ways to regain some momentum ahead of a crucial few weeks in Europe and in the league, with a massive away trip to Ajax in the Europa League on the horizon.

After the most unconvincing and disjointed 90 minutes you are ever likely to see, Galatasaray scraped out a 1-0 win, thanks to a Victor Osimhen penalty.

If it wasn't for a fantastic performance from defender Davinson Sanchez and Osimhen's excellent work to win the penalty, the two-time defending champions could have easily dropped more points.

Despite their pretty incredible start to the campaign - 17 wins and 3 draws from 20 games - recent performances have been a serious concern, coinciding with the injury to midfield maestro Gabriel Sara, who finally made his return off the bench against Konyaspor.

Without the Brazilian, they lost a huge element of control in the team, while also highlighting their lack of depth. As a result, there have been loud calls from fans for Galatasaray to be busy this January, and they are expected to make several signings in the coming weeks with the Turkish transfer window closing on February 11th.

Fenerbahce have already bought in Milan Skriniar, Diego Carlos and Anderson Talisca. Galatasaray need to make some transfers to swing the momentum back towards them.

Speaking of Fenerbahce, the chasing side had a really tough test against high-flying Goztepe, and were without Jose Mourinho who was serving a suspension.

The first half of the contest was a horror show for Fener, with them going down 1-0 while being on the receiving end of a brilliant 45 minutes from Goztepe, who were guilty of missing several chances. Fenerbahce were fortunate not to be two or three down as the half-time whistle blew.

But knowing his important the game was, they came out for the second half flying, with Allan Saint-Maximin and Filip Kostic being bought on to inject some extra pace and directness on the flanks. Dusan Tadic was withdrawn, as it was clearly not a game for him due to the intensity of the contest.

As a result, Fenerbahce scored three goals in a scintillating 10-minute blitz at the start of the half, after being given a major helping hand from Goztepe for the equaliser which surely changed the course of the game.

Youssef En-Nesyri continued his unbelievable run of form, bagging a brace, including an outrageous header to put his team ahead. Nine goals in his last six Super Lig matches makes for excellent reading.

Oguz Aydin also got on the scoresheet with an incredible finish from the wing, catching the goalkeeper out.

Goztepe got a goal back with around 10 minutes left of the match to set up a nervy finish, but Fenerbahce saw out the game relatively comfortably, claiming an impressive and very important 3-2 win against a side that has caused everyone problems this season.

Six points behind Galatasaray, the title race continues to rattle along at an electric pace.

High-scoring weekend

It was a sensational weekend across the Super Lig, with five games seeing five or more goals and two matches that ended 5-4. Only two teams also ended up not scoring - Bodrum and Konyaspor.

In the crazy game between Alanyaspor and Istanbul Basaksehir, the former gave up a two-goal lead to trail 3-2, before scoring three goals in the last 10 minutes to lead 5-3. The league's top goalscorer Krzysztof Piatek scored his second of the game late on which proved to be a consolation, but took his tally to 15 for the season - two ahead of Simon Banza and three ahead of Osimhen and En-Nesyri.

And in the final match of the gameweek on Monday, Kasimpasa won another mad clash, coming from 2-0, 3-2, and 4-3 down to win 5-4 against a Hatayspor side that were playing with 10 men after just eight minutes.

Vincent Aboubakar scored a brace for the away side, but it wasn't to be enough.
