Iraq converted a penalty in the 17th (yes, 17th) minute of second half stoppage time to eliminate the United Arab Emirates and advance to the March 2026 intercontinental playoffs.

The 62-year-old former Socceroos manager took charge of Iraq's national team in May 2025 with the sole goal of steering the nation to their first FIFA World Cup appearance since 1986.

He moved one step closer to ticking that achievement off the list as they pipped the United Arab Emirates 3-2 in the fifth round of Asian qualifying.

Iraq will be the AFC representative at next year's intercontinental play-offs in which six teams will battle for the final two spots at the showcase event.

Arnold was present at a post-game press conference at the Basra International Stadium when the players' celebrations spilled over from the dressing rooms into the media theatrette, with an embarrassed and humbled Arnold cowering in response.
