American phenom Jordan Stolz continued his impressive form at the Winter Olympics in Milan after winning the gold medal at the men's 500 metres, beating his biggest competitor, Dutchman Jenning de Boo, in a direct heat and with a new Olympic record.

Stolz opened faster, but fell behind De Boo, who started in the outside lane. De Boo flew through the last inside lane, but exited wide and saw Stolz take a small lead, which 'Ice Jordan' converted into a record time at the Olympics: 33.77, 0.11 seconds under the time of reigning world champion De Boo.

It was the second time De Boo won silver behind Jordan Stolz, who also laid claim to the gold medal at the 1000 metres.

Chinese skater Xue Zhiwen got out of the first half of the 16 heats with the fastest time, which he set at 34.66 - three tenths over the Olympic record - before the favourites hit the ice in the latter half.

Canadian Laurent Dubreuil, the 500m world champion in 2021, surprised the field after breaking the Olympic record following a false start, setting the new record at 34.26 after missing the podium all season long.

It was good for the bronze medal for the 31-year-old Dubreuil, who finished half a second behind the now two-time Olympic gold medalist Jordan Stolz, and just under four tenths behind De Boo, who won silver behind Stolz again, just like at the 1000m.
