The Netherlands, led by two-time gold medallist Xandra Velzeboer, made it to the final along with Arianna Fontana's Italy, who eliminated the United States and France in Saturday's first semifinal.
The two short track powerhouses were joined by South Korea and Canada, who narrowly beat out China to advance to final A.
In the final, Canada led for most of the race but was challenged by Xandra Velzeboer and the Netherlands. However, after Michelle Velzeboer was switched back in, she fell after contact with Canada after a hard push from Selma Poutsma, knocking the Netherlands out of the race.
A scintillating final couple of laps saw the three remaining teams all take the lead at least once, with Canada losing it to Italy, and South Korea's Shim Suk-hee taking it from Elisa Confortola with one lap to go.
Kim Gil-li passed the line for Korea in first place, winning the nation its seventh gold medal at the women's 3000m relay in Olympic history. Italy finished in second place in front of Canada.
