Double Rugby World Cup-winning centre Lukhanyo Am will leave the Sharks to join Japanese side Mitsubishi Sagamihara DynaBoars in the coming season.

Am joined the Sharks in 2016 and has made over 100 appearances for the side, though recent seasons have been blighted with injury. He had a previous short stint in Japan at the Kobelco Kobe Steelers three years ago.

He will replace another Springbok at the DynaBoars after wing Kurt-Lee Arendse returned to South Africa to play for the Bulls.

“I am very excited to be joining Mitsubishi Dynaboars,” Am said. “I look forward to bringing my experience to the team and playing alongside my team-mates and fans this season. See you at the stadium!”

The Sharks paid tribute to the 31-year-old, who has dropped down the pecking order for the Springboks in recent years and is currently on a standby list for their Autumn International series tour to the Northern Hemisphere.

“A leader. A Springbok. A Shark through and through. With over 100 caps to his name, we say thank you to Lukhanyo Am for his years of dedication, leadership, and excellence in the black and white,” the Sharks said on Wednesday.

“You’ve left an indelible mark on this club, both on and off the field. Wishing you every success as you embark on your next chapter in Japan.”

There are nine players in the current Springbok squad who play their club rugby in Japan, where the financial rewards outstrip anything offered in the local game.

Chances are you’re about to lose.
