We take a look back on some of the most exciting moments that happened during Major League Baseball's Opening Weekend as the 2026 regular season is now underway!

20. First home run of 2026

Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Brandon Lowe was the first player to hit a home run in the 2026 season. Was it the biggest bomb in the world? No. But it was still the first home run nonetheless.

19. New York Yankees sweep

The New York Yankees not only extended their Opening Day win streak to six years - the current longest streak of any team - but they've now swept three straight Opening Weekend series.

They remain the only team, alongside their division rival, the Toronto Blue Jays, as the only two American League teams to come out of Opening Weekend with a 3-0 record.

18. Cam Schlittler debut

Staying on the Yankees, rookie starting pitcher Cam Schlittler tossed 5.1 shutout innings, giving up just one hit and no walks with eight strikeouts in his MLB debut.

17. Emerson Hancock no-hitter

Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Emerson Hancock tossed six no-hit innings in his first start of the season, giving up only one walk while striking out nine.

16. Carson Benge debut home run

New York Mets rookie Carson Benge launched one to deep right-center field for his first career home run in their opening series against the Pittsburgh Pirates!

15. Jackson Merrill home run robbery

There were a ton of amazing plays in the field during Opening Weekend, but this Jackson Merrill home run robbery sent the Padres crowd into a frenzy.

14. Astros 11 straight runs

After going down 6-0 to the Los Angeles Angels, the Houston Astros would put up 11 straight runs between the fifth and sixth innings to take home the win.

13. Alex Vesia emotional return

Los Angeles Dodgers relief pitcher Alex Vesia made an emotional return to the mound during Opening Weekend. It was his first time back on the diamond after him and his wife, Kayla, lost their newborn daughter back in October 2025.

Vesia wore a glove that honored his late daughter and has since given up just one hit in two innings (two games) without allowing a single run or walk so far this season.

12. Will Smith birthday blast

Keeping it with the Dodgers, catcher Will Smith had himself one heck of a birthday. It was not only his bobblehead night, but his family threw out the game's first pitch, and he followed it up with a home run of his own during the game (@ 4:00).

11. Mike Trout two home runs

Los Angeles Angels superstar Mike Trout hit a home run in each of the team's first two games of the season for the first time in his 16-year career. Trout recorded at least one hit in each of the four games against Houston, coming out of the series with a .467 batting average, two home runs, and seven RBI.

10. First successful challenge in MLB history

New York Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez initiated the first successful ABS challenge in league history during Opening Weekend. This season is the first ever that has implemented the ABS system, which has been in the works for years now, especially in the minor leagues.

9. JJ Wetherholt first career home run

St. Louis Cardinals top prospect JJ Wetherholt launched his first career home run in just his second career at-bat during Opening Weekend! And this isn't the last time we see Whetherholt on this list...

8. Dylan Cease makes Blue Jays history

Newly signed Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Dylan Cease made franchise history during Opening Weekend after recording 12 strikeouts - the most ever by a starting pitcher in their debut with the team.

7. Kevin Gausman makes Blue Jays history

Keeping it in The Six, Blue Jays ace Kevin Gausman also made franchise history after his 11 strikeouts became the most ever by a Blue Jays starting pitcher during Opening Day.

Toronto would also go on to break an MLB record after recording a combined 50 strikeouts from their pitchers - the most ever by a team throughout Opening Weekend.

6. Jacob Misiorowski makes Brewers history

Much like Gausman, Milwaukee Brewers' young ace Jacob Misiorowski made Brewers history during Opening Weekend after recording 11 strikeouts - the most by a Brewers starter on Opening Day.

The difference between him and Gausman is that Misiorowski is the third youngest Opening Day starter in Brewers history at 23 years of age, while Gausman is a seasoned veteran at 35.

5. Kevin McGonigle historic debut

Detroit Tigers rookie Kevin McGonigle made MLB history after becoming just the sixth player in 126 years to record four hits in his big league debut.

He finished the game with two doubles, two singles, two runs, and two RBI.

4. Munetaka Murakami 3 HRs 3 games:

Chicago White Sox rookie Munetaka Murakami launched three home runs in the first three games of the season (one in each), joining elite company as just one of three other players ever to accomplish the feat.

His 1.871 OPS (slugger % + on-base %) is the second-highest among all players in the league after Opening Weekend.

3. Chase DeLauter 4 HRs 3 games:

Joining Murakami in history was Cleveland Guardians rookie Chase DeLauter, who not only hit three home runs in three games, but four in total! The two rookies joined Trevor Story (2016) and Kyle Lewis (2019) as the only players to ever hit three home runs in the first three games of the season.

2. Owen Caissie walk-off

Miami Marlins outfielder Owen Caissie not only hit his first home run with the Marlins, but he did it in walk-off fashion to complete the series sweep of the Rockies

The Marlins started off the season 3-0 for the first time in 17 years.

1. Five walk-offs in one day

Before Caissie launched his own, five other walk-offs happened in one day during Opening Weekend!

One came from the Cardinals' rookie Wetherholt, who hit a line drive grounder into right field to give St. Louis the win in extra innings.

The next was from Toronto Blue Jays' Ernie Clement in the bottom of the 11th (@3:10). Teammate Andres Gimenez previously hit one in the bottom of the 9th (watch here), which was the first walk-off of the 2026 MLB season.

Third came from Luis Robert Jr. of the New York Mets (@4:06). The fourth came from Cincinnati Reds' Dane Myers (@5:26). And the last, and certainly the best, came from Dominic Smith (@8:03), who hit a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning on a full count to give the Braves the win.
