Bodo/Glimt do the unthinkable
12 - Needing a win to keep their hopes of progression alive, Club Brugge kicked off the matchweek with a straightforward 4-1 defeat of Kairat Almaty in the Kazakh capital. Four different players from Blauw-Zwart found the back of the net in the match. Club still remain outside of the top 24, but the victory gives them a shot still. With 12 goals scored in this term's league phase, it is the most the Belgians have ever scored in a UCL group phase.
7 - The biggest shock of the matchweek by a landslide came in the Arctic Circle, where Bodo/Glimt pulled off a stunning 3-1 success against the 2022/23 champions Manchester City. The Norwegians were lethal on the counter, punishing their more fancied opponents to grab a vital three points. City's top eight ambitions took a huge hit with the reverse. It was a first-ever win in the UCL proper for Bodo, and also a maiden victory over an English team - both at the seventh time of asking.
20 - Despite going down a man, FC Kobenhavn, ground out a 1-1 stalemate at home versus Napoli in what was a huge game for both teams. Thomas Delaney saw red 10 minutes before half time, with the Serie A holders capitalising on the man advantage minutes later. But, the Danes persevered, levelling 18 minutes from time to stay alive. FCK have now scored in their last 20 European home games.
17 - Arsenal became the first team to secure a place in the last 16 following a 3-1 success at the expense of Inter Milan. Mikel Arteta's side exacted revenge on the Nerazzurri for last season's defeat at this stage of the competition. A Gabriel Jesus double coupled with a Viktor Gyokeres goal aided the Gunners to remain top of the league phase. Inter have lost to an English side for the 17th time.
9 - Villarreal's miserable UCL league phase campaign saw them give away a lead at home to Ajax. The Yellow Submarine ultimately sank to a 2-1 reverse in front of their fans. Oliver Edvardsen scored the winner for the four-time champions in the 90th minute to give them a chance heading into the last round. Villarreal conceded nine goals at home in this league phase, which is the most they have ever let in during the group phase of a single season.
45 - It was a strong response from Real Madrid who returned to winning ways with a 6-1 beating of AS Monaco. Kylian Mbappe's first half brace spearheaded the record Champions League winners to their fifth victory in the competition this term. Monaco are now in danger of missing out of the top 24, owning the worst goal difference of the current top 24. There was a whopping 45 shots in the match, with the Spaniards outshooting their opposition 25-20.
14 - Costinha and Mehdi Taremi fired in the opening 45 minutes to help Olympiakos Piraeus to a 2-0 win against the visiting Bayer Leverkusen. The Greek champions badly needed all three points to remain in contention for a first knockout appearance in the UCL since 2013/14. Leverkusen's situation has now gotten complicated as well, as they will need a result next Wednesday to move on. Thrylos earned their first win over a German opponent in 14 years.
4 - Sporting CP pulled off the other significant upset of Tuesday night thanks to a 90th minute Luis Suarez winner. That saw them beat the holders Paris Saint-Germain 2-1. Both teams are on 13 points, and will participate in the knockout rounds. It is now a matter of whether they will avoid the knockout playoffs. For Sporting, they managed to win all of their home games at this stage, something they have achieved for the fourth time in a UEFA club competition.
15 - A red card 24 minutes in put Borussia Dortmund behind the eight ball against Tottenham. The North Londoners went on to prevail 2-0 against Die Schwarzgelben. With just one shot on target in the whole match, the Bundesliga outfit have lost out on any hopes at qualifying directly for the last 16. In fact, Dortmund have conceded the joint-most goals amongst the current top 24 sides with 15 goals.
Qarabag work more magic
24 - Galatasaray were left the happier between them and Atletico Madrid following a 1-1 draw in Istanbul. After going behind just four minutes in, the Turks found a response 16 minutes later through an own goal. It leaves Gala with a near-certain knockout round berth, while Atleti now have more work to do to claim one of the coveted top eight places. It is the first time in 24 European matches that Los Colchoneros were involved in a stalemate.
11 - Perhaps the story of the Champions League this term, Qarabag secured another remarkable win. This time, it came at the expense of Eintracht Frankfurt, as Bahlul Mustafazada's 90th minute goal put the Azeris on the precipice of going through. The 3-2 win also officially eliminated Frankfurt from contention to make the next stage. It took Qarabag 11 attempts to finally beat a club from the Bundesliga, as they were 0-2-8 before kick-off.
2 - Out of nowhere, Athletic Club are now in the top 24. The Basque club held off Atalanta for a key 3-2 victory in Bergamo. A pair of goals in the space of four second half minutes helped pull Bilbao over the line, increasing their chances of a maiden knockout round showing. Atalanta, already guaranteed a place in the top 24, will need to win next week to qualify directly for the last 16. For Athletic, it was just their second away victory in the UCL proper.
5 - Harry Kane netted twice for Bayern Munich, but hit the frame of the goal on a penalty to lose out on a hat-trick. Still, the Bavarians were able to top Union Saint-Gilloise 2-0 at home to secure a place in the top eight. Les Unionstes can still dream of playing in the UCL come February, but will require a victory next week, plus some help. They lost on German soil for the very first time in what was their fifth such match in Europe.
0 - Moises Caicedo saved Chelsea from an unexpected loss of points at home, as the Blues edged Pafos 1-0. Liam Rosenior's men are now assured a place in the top 24, and can now push to make the last 16. Debutants Pafos are not out quite yet, but have to grab three points in their final match to have any hope. If the Cypriots do somehow advance, they will need to improve on the road. They are the only team to have played all their away matches in the league phase and score zero goals.
32 - Juventus have come out on top over their bogey team Benfica. Second half goals nine minutes apart gave the Bianconeri a 2-0 home success to progress with a game to spare. Meanwhile, the Portuguese regulars remain on the outside looking in regarding their chances to making it through. Juve have had huge struggles with As Aguias, with this being just their second win across 10 matches (2-1-7). The only other victory came 32 years ago in the UEFA Cup.
22 - Dominik Szoboszlai's marker just before the break was key for Liverpool, who scored twice more in the second half to see off Olympique Marseille 3-0 at Stade Velodrome. For the second time this league phase, the Reds have won back-to-back matches. That has propelled them to fourth spot with a game left. Marseille are 19th, and will need a point to avoid elimination. For Liverpool, they claimed a 22nd victory over French with this result.
38 - Newcastle will also be progressing as they enjoyed a 3-0 home success over PSV Eindhoven. Yoane Wissa started the party at St. James' Park with an early goal, before Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes also got involved with the goalscoring in a wonderful night for the Magpies. PSV, who will need another result to ensure a top 24 place, have lost consecutive group phase matches after going 38 games without doing so.
8 - Despite a chaotic first half, Barcelona grabbed two second half goals to get the better of Czechia's Slavia Praha 4-2 on their travels. Dani Olmo scored what proved to be the winner, before Robert Lewandowski put the result beyond doubt eight minutes later. The Catalans are back in contention to make to the last 16, knocking out their opponents in the process. Slavia have now gone eight home games in Europe without a win.
