A fairly quiet evening of National Hockey League (NHL) action saw one game go the distance, with the New York Islanders holding off the Chicago Blackhawks.

With just one win in their last eight going into the contest, the Blackhawks were looking to get back on track at home. However, things could not have gotten off to a worse start at the United Center for the home fans, as Calum Ritchie gave the Islanders an early lead.

Bo Horvat added a second midway through the frame to put Chicago in a hole. Fortunately for them, there was still plenty of time left, and towards the end of the second, they came to life.

Teuvo Teravainen got one back to give the team hope of a comeback, finishing off a swift passing series. Then, with three seconds left in the second, the hosts drew level.

Nick Lardis was the one to take his chance, leaving a dramatic twist before the second intermission. Matthew Schaefer got the assist on the leveller, making him the youngest defenseman in NHL history to reach 25 points.

While the Islanders outshot their opponents 10-6 in the third, they could not find a breakthrough. That resulted in overtime hockey, where Chicago were the more adventurous team in the five-minute mini-period. However, they failed to make the most of those chances.

In the end, they would be made to regret it, as they failed to score in the shootout. Horvat was the only one of the five skaters to put his effort in, giving the Islanders a win.

New York go up to fourth spot in the East with that win, while the Blackhawks continue to languish near the bottom of the West.

Elsewhere, the Toronto Maple Leafs bounced back from Sunday's overtime reverse with a 4-0 defeat of the visiting New Jersey Devils. Four different players got on the board for the Buds, who have now won three of their last four, putting them three points out of a playoff spot.

A crazy third period between the Florida Panthers and Montreal Canadiens saw both teams score twice, forcing overtime. The Habs went on to prevail 3-2 thanks to a Nick Suzuki winner with 1:36 left in the extra period.

Brad Marchand and Seth Reinhart had put the Panthers up by two with less than five minutes left in regulation. Yet, the Canadiens refused to give in. It took Cole Caufield just 32 seconds to halve the deficit, before Suzuki tied things up with less than 90 seconds left.

The 26-year-old then netted on a power play to end the game and give Montreal their 21st win of the year.

The Pittsburgh Penguins did their damage in the first two periods of their 5-1 success over the Carolina Hurricanes. Anthony Mantha scored twice for the hosts as they completed a dominant victory.

In Vancouver, the Philadelphia Flyers claimed their third win in four games by beating the Canucks 6-3.
